Maned wolves are a species of South American canid native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Peru. They are the largest canid in South America, standing up to 3 feet tall at the shoulder. Maned wolves have a unique fox-like appearance, with a reddish fur, a long black mane, and a black-tipped tail. They are solitary animals, living and hunting alone, and are most active in the early evening and early morning hours. Maned wolves are currently listed as near-threatened, with estimated population numbers of around 17,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts are underway in order to protect the species from further decline.
