The African hunting dog, also known as the African wild dog, is a species of large canid native to Sub-Saharan Africa. It is the largest of its kind and is most easily identified by its unique coat pattern of large, irregularly-shaped spots. African hunting dogs hunt in packs and are known for their extremely successful hunting techniques. They are highly social animals and live in packs of between 6 and 20 individuals, headed by a dominant breeding pair. African Hunting Dogs are endangered, with only an estimated 6,600 individuals remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts are underway in order to protect the species from further decline.
