The American river otter is a semiaquatic mammal native to North America. It belongs to the family Mustelidae, which also includes weasels, ferrets, and minks. River otters are well-adapted for aquatic life, with streamlined bodies, webbed feet, and dense fur that provides insulation in water. They primarily inhabit freshwater habitats such as rivers, lakes, and marshes, where they feed on fish, crustaceans, amphibians, and small mammals. River otters are highly social animals and often live in family groups, with individuals communicating through vocalizations, scent markings, and body language.
