The southern tamandua, also known as the lesser anteater, is a tree-climbing mammal native to South America’s forests and savannas. It has a long snout, powerful forelimbs with sharp claws, and a prehensile tail that helps it navigate the trees. Covered in coarse, often two-toned fur, the tamandua feeds mainly on ants and termites, using its long, sticky tongue to extract them from nests.
